Henry Evelyn Pierrepont, son of Hezekiah, and his wife, Anna Maria. Henry led his fellow heirs in establishing restrictive covenants for all of their inherited property. When Pierrepont died in 1838, his children inherited wide swaths of the family’s Brooklyn Heights land. These heirs started a decades-long process of divvying up the estate and parceling it out to other local developers and speculators. Pierrepont’s marketing of Brooklyn Heights as one of America’s first suburbs is conventional wisdom, found everywhere from scholarly opinion pieces to the historical markers lining the streets of today’s landmark district. The narrow and twisty canyon road up to the dam site is sporadically used, barring the occasional ranching resident or intrepid cyclist. Your donation provides refuge, recovery, employment and housing services to up to 500 individuals every day of the year. Another essential component to the St. Francis approach is our philosophy of care. Our work is trauma informed, person centered, and recovery oriented. We use harm reduction and motivational interviewing techniques to ensure our individualized and goal-focused recovery services are tailored to the needs of each unique person. We work in partnership with our guests to ensure the best outcome possible for each individual.
The Resource Center also features a library, telephones, and computers – all vital tools for keeping in touch with loved ones and job-hunting. We offer guests a variety of support groups, meetings, activities, classes. One of the favorites is when our volunteer musician plays the piano and leads the guests in song.

We are currently seeking volunteers who have expertise in mental health, wellness, and other related fields to assist with programming. St. Francis House is the largest distributor of clothing to people experiencing homelessness in Boston. Every year we connect thousands of individuals with clean clothing through our Fresh Threads program. Through the program, we provide guests with everyday attire, brand-new undergarments, shoes, socks, winter gear and other essentials. We welcome volunteers with ways to enrich our services and participate in events like our Women’s Day celebrations in May.
Nothing greets you when you arrive at the site of Southern California's single most deadly disaster. There are no signs, no memorials, nor even any recognizable ruins that mark the location where, on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam suddenly and catastrophically collapsed. The collapse sent a 10-story wall of water barreling down San Francisquito Canyon. Over the next six hours, the wave would wash over several towns and settlements in its path on its 54 mile journey to the Pacific Ocean.
Continuing pressure for commercial space here, combined with new popular residential locations farther out in what was now a borough of New York City, tipped the block to almost wholly commercial over the course of a few decades. Pierrepont and his heirs’ restrictions were largely intended to establish residential living. Not much more than a generation after the original developers had enforced their intended vision of neighborhood character, Brooklyn boomed.
Farther south, the town of Lytton, British Columbia, on June 29 experienced Canada’s hottest recorded temperature, 119 degrees, and was largely destroyed by a wildfire the next day. Two minutes before midnight on March 12, the dam failed catastrophically, sending a tsunami down into San Francisquito Canyon. Dam keeper Harnischfeger, along with his son and girlfriend, were likely the first causalities of the 10-story wall of water.
